After celebrating the bootylicious rollerskate jams of the 1980s, we decided we needed to change things up a bit and try something new. With the help of DJ SAT 1600, Chatty Cathy and I threw three Death Disco parties at Silk City Lounge.
Death Disco combined the darker, more machine-like elements of the 70s and 80s up to the present year, and we tried to cross genres and include experimental tracks that were meant for the clubs.
Starting with avant-garde Krautrock innovators like Can and Neu, we snuck in tracks by punk-electronic freaks such as Suicide, Throbbing Gristle, and Einsturzende Neubauten and worked our way up to Orbital and Add N to (X). We played around with mixing Cabaret Voltaire, arty punk (Devo, Buzzcocks), New Order, Mantronix, Gino Soccio and freaky film soundtracks (Jerry Goldsmith, Yoko Kanno). We played stuff from the first wave of "No Wave" artists like the Contortions, ESG & Mars with current bands inspired by them: the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Glass Candy, Clinic, etc.
