I was inspired while trashpicking these great religious pictures on silk fabric one day, to create a whole piece around them. I also found this box being thrown out in the trash. (Actually a lot of my art uses recycled/reused materials I trashpick or get cheaply at yard sales & the salvation army, thrift stores, etc.) I guess religion is a weird topic. I grew up catholic, but as a girl - where do you fit into the Catholic life? An obedient virginal girl? A self-sacrificing hard-working mother/housewife? Since I have never even come remotely close to marriage, myself, how can I live the "catholic" lifestyle? No sex before marriage? No birth control? Women - save for the cult of the Virgin Mary - are basically powerless and must submit to the will of men - except when they are unmarried virginal girls. Then you should be willing to die for your purity? And years and years of abuse of power by priests and religious men. Some had children. Many made deals with bad people. One pope was a woman! She died in childbirth. After that, how could you top it? Sometimes you look at the beliefs you're supposed to have. There are a lot of cool things about catholicism too. I like the mystical aspects. How anyone can be forgiven with just an admittance of your own guilt, a small prayer. The Easter Vigil, Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve... frankincense & myrrh. Stained glass windows and flying buttresses, gothic arches, tall and eerie pipe organs. All those beautiful angels painted everywhere. A sense that you're not really alone, all those saints are there looking out for you. Heaven. This piece might still be hanging at Cypher's house. I loaned him some artwork back in 1999 for a little soire he was having... I hope he has kept it and hasn't thrown it away. |
